Christmas Symbols
There are lots of fun things we do during the Christmas Season. During the
holidays we see lots of items that we use to celebrate Christmas and decorate our
homes. These are all fun things, but some have a deeper meaning that we don’t
always think about.
Have you ever wondered about Christmas? Do we just enjoy the lights, Santa Claus,
and presents, and not think about the birth of Christ and the gift of love? Is there
any connection between the true meaning of Christmas and the symbols that we use
to celebrate Christmas? Yes, I think there is a connection. Let me teach you:
Candy Cane: It represents the shepherds crook. The crook of the staff helps bring wandering sheep back to the flock. It reminds us to show love because we are our brothers keepers.
Read Isaiah 40:11
Bell: Lost sheep are found by the sound of the bell. It should ring for mankind to return to the fold - signifying that all are precious in the eyes of the Lord.
Mosiah 26:21
Fir Tree: The pure green color of our Christmas tree remains green all year long. This shows the everlasting hope of mankind. All the needles point heavenward. This is to remind us that our thoughts should turn toward heaven.
Alma 18:30
Gift Bow: We put bows on our presents to remind us of the spirit of the brotherhood of man. We should remember this as the bow is tied, with love and good feelings toward each other.
Romans 12:10
Presents: As we look at these, let us remember that we give gifts of love at Christmas, just as the wisemen gave gifts to the infant Jesus.
Matthew 2:11
Star: God promised a Savior for the world, and one bright star shone down from the heavens as fulfillment of that promise.
3 Nephi 1:21
Wreath: As you can see, it if round. This wreath represents the eternal nature of love. It never ceases, stops or ends. It is one continuous round of affection.
Moroni 8:17
We can enjoy the fun things at Christmas without forgetting what Christmas
represents. It represents the birth of Christ and His great love for us. It also gives
us the opportunity to show our love for each other. Let us remember the meaning
behind the symbols of Christmas.
